National Geographic Traveller (UK) editors share travel tips to celebrate the 100th issue

The March 2022 edition of National Geographic Traveller (UK) is the title鈥檚 100th issue. To celebrate, our editors have shared some of the top tips they鈥檝e picked up from their travels over the past 11 years.

Where do we find inspiration for our trips?
鈥淚鈥檇 be reading National Geographic Traveller cover to cover even if I weren鈥檛 working here, but it鈥檚 lucky I do as it鈥檚 the richest source of inspiration for my own travels 鈥 much to the amusement of my colleagues. Time and time again, a feature will worm its way into my thoughts and linger there, drumming its fingers, until I book the trip. The most recent example of this was our Rome cover story (). After reading the gorgeous , learning about the  and admiring the sun-dappled photography by Francesco Lastrucci, resistance was futile: flights were booked.鈥

How do we plan our trips?
If you travel independently, Facebook groups are a priceless resource, where locals or fellow travellers offer real-time, on-the-ground information. On a recent trip to Sri Lanka, landslides tragically tore entire slopes of the countryside down, closing roads and rail lines. Thanks to the help of local members of groups I鈥檇 joined 鈥 who lived in the area I was trying to reach 鈥 I managed to easily circumvent disrupted roads and get the latest on the ever-changing train timetables.鈥
Nora Wallaya, deputy digital editor

How do we get ready for our trips?
鈥淧ack a travel bag of toiletries so you鈥檙e always ready to go. It just makes it easier not having to pull it together every time you want to travel. Of course, it always needs an update every trip, but not having to constantly remember your toothbrush can be handy if early-morning dashes to the airport are a regular occurrence.鈥
